Ad: Food Experiment: Kek Batik (A No-Bake Cake!)

Hello hello! It's me again! I figured since I've been away for soooo long, I'd make it up to you readers by writing more than one post! I know it's not the same, but I'm trying! Ok well, have you ever wished that you could bake a delicious cake without putting in much effort at all, and it'll still taste absolutely fantastic? Well worry no more, because now you can! Have you ever heard of Kek Batik? Believe it or not, I've only heard about it for the first time last year! I can't believe it took me so so long to discover it! Well kek batik is a super easy cake to make - and you don't even need an oven to make it! I know, some people may say "it's not a real cake" but when it tastes THIS good, I don't think ANYONE cares!

When I first tried it, my mind was completely blown! I kept asking, "what IS this?" Eventually I found out, but I only decided to make it myself when one fine day, I was craving for some and could not stop thinking about it! People kept saying it's super easy to make, so I turned to my best friend Google to find a quick recipe. I went to a few websites but finally decided to use this recipe.

Because that website is in Malay, I'm going to translate the recipe and method for you :)

Things you need:

250g Marie biscuits - break them into halves of quarters (any brand will do)
150g butter (it wasn't specified whether salted or unsalted, but I think both should be fine)
1 cup Milo powder (Milo is a brand of hot chocolate - any brand will do really!)
5 tablespoons of cocoa powder
1 tablespoon of vanilla essence
1/2 tin sweetened creamer
1/2 cup water
4 eggs
Marie biscuits - initially wanted to break them into two, but somehow I couldn't make up my mind and they became ugly! haha

Eggs

Cocoa Powder

Milo

Sweetened Creamer

Method:

1. In a large pot, add in the milo powder, cocoa powder, vanilla essence, sweetened creamer, water and eggs. Mix the ingredients thoroughly, put the pot on the stove and put the heat on medium. Continue stirring until everything is well-mixed.

2. Add the butter to the pot and stir thoroughly until the mixture thickens. Once it thickens, turn the stove off.

3. Add the Marie biscuits to the pot and coat them evenly with the mixture. Make sure to do this fast because the heat will make the biscuits mushy if you don't do it quick enough!

4. Put the evenly-coated Marie biscuits in a container. Choose a container that is just the right size. If it's too big, the kek batik will be too short, so it won't look much like a cake. Choose one that's just the right height for you. (To know which container is best, try it with the halved/quartered Marie biscuits)

5. Put the container in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours! I try to leave mine overnight so that the cake sets, but four hours should be enough if you can't wait to try it! :)

The mixture will look like this at step 2!

This is what the kek batik looks like before being refrigerated

Ok before I share with you the final outcome of my kek batik, I want to share some tips with you all! First, if you don't have any cocoa powder, just skip it altogether. You can use just Milo (or any other brand you like) for this recipe. Secondly, if you're not familiar with Marie biscuits (like me), do note that there are different types. I wasn't aware of the fact that the Marie biscuits I bought and used when I was making this kek batik were the large version. The cake still turned out fine so yay! Third, it's important to do coat the biscuits really fast because the cake will not be as nice when it doesn't have that lovely crunchy feel. After transferring the coated biscuits to the container, make sure you immediately pop it into the refrigerator so that you can prevent the heat from softening your biscuits. Hope the tips are helpful! Are you ready to see my kek batik? Well here goes!

Fresh from the fridge!

A little slice of it

The cake was amazing. Everyone who tried it, loved it. We finished it within two days! So what are you waiting for? Give it a try! Since Raya is still not over yet, if you're thinking of asking some guests to come over, whip this up the night before to impress them. They'll love it for sure!

Til the next post,
